 ¥ To what extent have the Millennium Development Goals been a success? Student Number: 1546031 Word Count: 1488 Words In the year 2000, at the Millennium Summit of the United Nations every member state of the UN at the time agreed to help in achieving eight goals that targeted areas such as poverty, education, gender equality, disease and more. Each goal had its own specific targets as well as dates for achieving those targets. Since many of the goals expire on December 31, 2015 (McArthur, 2013) it has come up in recent times on whether these goals have been a success. This essay, using four out of eight goals as examples will argue that whilst the Millennium goals might not have achieved all their goals as per paper, their progress in their respective fields has been enormous and hence will conclude on how they have been a success. The first goal this essay will discuss is the goal that was aimed at eradicating extreme poverty and hunger. Since these goals are of such a wide range, they are divided into what can be defined as further sub-goals. The goal targeted to halve between 1990 and 2015 â€Å"the proportion of people whose income is less than $1.25 a day†, â€Å"the proportion of people who suffer from hunger†, and also â€Å"Achieve full and productive employment and decent work for all, including women and young people† (UNDP report, 2010). In overall aspect this has been one of the more successful goals.
